Rain and cold weather didn’t stop crews taking part this weekend in an event billed as the largest provincewide cleanup in Nova Scotia history. Some 10,000 people were expected to be part of Clean Across Nova Scotia, a two-day event that got underway Friday. More than 200 cleanups were held across the province as part of World Cleanup 2012, an event that runs from March 24 to Sept. 25.

For the second time since 2010, Clean Up Slovenia 2012 gathered 270,000 volunteers (that’s 15 per cent of the country’s population!). In Portugal they had the same aim, but only one per cent of the population there turned up to clean the rubbish dumped in nature and on the green patches in towns and cities. So far, 15 countries in the world have organised such one-day clean-ups.
