International conference in Russia to prepare for the country-wide action "Let's do it!" 2012

From 9th to 12th of June, an international conference in preparation for the Russia-wide clean-up action “Let’s do it” 2012 (Sdelaem 2012) was held in Leningrad province, Orehhovo, recreation centre „Zhuravushka“.

Environmental activists from Yaroslavl, Chelyabinsk, St Petersburg, Moscow, Ufa, Solikamsk, Tomsk, Novosibirsk, Smolensk, Ulyanovsk, Ryazan and Perm were taking part in the conference.

These people have taken upon themselves the responsibility of organizing a clean-up action in their region as part of the large-scale project to clean the country from rubbish in September 2012. In the course of three days in the Karelian isthmus, conference participants exchanged their experiences in organizing an environmental action.

The seminars, trainings and workshops discussed the topics of waste mapping, working with volunteers, organising clean-ups, working with the government, searching for and attracting potential partners,  conducting environmental social projects, preserving and sustaining the results of the clean-up activities. In a creative atmosphere, the participants worked on looking for new ideas as well as finding points of weaknesses and how to overcome those in the existing plans. They also freed themselves of work stress with the help of physical exercises, dancing, team games, songs and entertaining performances prepared by the participants.

The conference has been organized by volunteers with funds from a grant given by the Foundation of GlobalGrinGrants. This grant was won by the movement „Musora.Bolshe.Net“ for organizing the Russia-wide project „500 clean-ups in one day on 15th May 2011“.

On 15th September, a Russia-wide clean-up action „Let’s do it!“ 2012 will take place, where approximately 10% of the country’s population will participate in. For more information on that project, see http://sdelaem2012.ru/

Update 16 Jun

The last day of Russian inter-regional conference ended well. It was devoted to the preparation for Russian clean-up action "Let's do it 2012!". The conference was attended by approximately 50 people - activists from Yaroslavl, Chelyabinsk, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Ufa, Solikamsk, Ulyanovsk, Ryazan, Veliky Novgorod, Bryansk, a journalist from Germany, and Russian's team coordinator in world-wide movement "Let's do it!". During all four days in the camp in Orehovo participants were working, sharing experience, training in different formats - from reports and presentations to clean-up training in the forest. Participants shared their experience, challenges, plans. Mostly there were questions about information campaign of the project "Let's do it!", attracting and motivating volunteers, partnerships, issues of cooperation between regions and federal team's development.

Participants noted the inspiring atmosphere of the conference, this event allowed to meet with colleagues in real life, communicating with whom had previously been held only virtually on skype and e-mail. Good weather, warm-up games, singing, guitar-playing, swimming and boating helped to establish closer emotional contact between participants.

The future plans of the regional coordinators - including new regions, working on media plan of the project, search for partners and, of course, the preparation and conduct of pilot actions, cleanups.

Sincerely, Elena Rybakova
